What Skills Do You Need to Get an Excavator Job?

Excavators are pieces of heavy equipment that are used across the world every single day. They’re needed extensively in construction, demolition, forestry, mining, landscaping, and beyond, making an excavator job a great place to start a career working with heavy equipment. If that sounds appealing to you, you’re in luck! With the right skills and training, you’ll be on your way before you know it.

Education

To start off, as with most other jobs you’ll need to have a high school diploma or the equivalent. In addition to that, all excavator operators are required to have a valid driver’s license. Some states may require a commercial driver’s license (CDL) as well, so be sure to check your local laws to find out what the requirements are. Once you have both of those, it’s highly recommended you attend a training program so you can learn the ins and outs of maintaining and operating an excavator. Not only will this improve your resumé and boost your confidence on the job, but it can be massively helpful in earning your certification.

Certification

Before you can land an excavator job, you need to pass the corresponding NCCER exam to obtain your credentials. Without the appropriate credentials, an excavator job will remain out of reach. While it is possible to study and pass the exam all on your own, taking a training course can make the process much easier.

For example, graduates of West Coast Training’s heavy equipment operator program go through extensive classroom education as well as hands-on training to prepare them for both the exam and their future careers. We cover the particulars of operating heavy equipment, as well as important civil engineering concepts, workplace safety, proper usage of tools, and much more. Students who successfully complete the program earn their credentials upon completion, preparing them for both excavator jobs as well as a variety of other pieces of heavy equipment.

Beyond the skills you learn, completing a rigorous course demonstrates to your future employers that you’re serious about your career. They’ll be able to tell that you aren’t just applying for an excavator job because you need a way to make money, but that you’re dedicated to growing and nurturing your skills. That distinction can make all the difference when you’re first starting out.
