How To Prepare for NCCER Testing

The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) sets the industry standard for certifying heavy equipment operators. Passing your NCCER testing is an important part of growing your career, so it’s vital that you are prepared if you want to receive your certification. If you’re worried about your ability to pass the test, don’t be! At West Coast Training, we have been preparing future heavy equipment operators to earn their credentials for over 60 years. Here are three different ways we can help you get ready for your NCCER testing.

1. In the Classroom

If you just want to pass your NCCER testing, you might consider just trying to memorize everything you need to know for the test. That, however, is a lot of boring work and doesn’t really teach you much about what it takes to actually be a successful heavy equipment operator. That’s why West Coast Training offers classroom courses where student training goes beyond rote memorization.

You’ll learn about complex applied mathematics, civil engineering concepts, project layout, basic surveying, and of course, workplace safety. You’ll also learn about the mechanics of the heavy equipment you’re training for along with all the other tools you’ll need while on the job. By taking this broader approach, you won’t just be prepared for NCCER testing. You’ll be prepared to be a knowledgeable and valuable employee anywhere you work.

2. Hands-On Training

Of course, classroom training can’t teach you everything. In order to completely understand the heavy equipment you’re learning to operate, you need to get out into the field and get your hands dirty. That’s why in addition to our rigorous classroom education, we offer comprehensive hands-on training in the field.

While in the field, you’ll have the opportunity to develop the skills you need to operate heavy machinery responsibly, confidently, and safely. As part of your hands-on training, you’ll get practical experience with operating techniques and preventative maintenance. Having that experience can help you take the abstract knowledge you learn in the classroom and contextualize it in an actual work setting. While it is possible to pass NCCER testing without having field experience, getting it now and having that understanding will make you a much more competent operator in the long run and make you a much more desirable hire for potential employers.

3. Classic Test Prep

In addition to your formal education and training, you can never go wrong with some good old-fashioned test prep. Review your lessons between classes and determine if there are areas you struggle with. Focus on those, then develop a study plan for yourself. If you want more information on the tests themselves, you can find additional details posted on the NCCER website.

If it ever starts to feel overwhelming, you can reach out for help. Your fellow students and instructors create a valuable community, all aligned with the same goals. If you need some additional support, it’s not far away. With the help of those around you and plenty of studying, you’ll master the material in no time.
