Requirements for Becoming a Tower Crane Operator

There are several requirements you’ll need to meet if you want to become a tower crane operator.

First, you’ll need a high school diploma or equivalent and be at least 18 years old.

Second, you’ll need proof of your ability to pass a crane operator training or certification test, which we shall discuss further in this article. You’ll also need to be able to pass a background check and meet any other requirements set by the certifying body in your state.

Third, while this is not a requirement, per se, you will need to be physically fit. A tower crane operator needs to have good upper body strength, as they will be responsible for operating the controls to raise, lower, and position loads. You’ll also learn how to perform basic calculations with the help of a formula chart to determine things like how much weight your crane can lift and how much weight it can safely and securely hold. And while you don’t have to be a math genius to become a crane operator, you will need to be able to add, subtract, divide, and multiply numbers effectively.

You will also have the option of specializing in specific types of cranes, such as crawler cranes, excavators, and more. You may also become certified to operate other types of cranes, such as a car screed, a jumbo, or a telescopic forklift.

Certification Options for Becoming a Tower Crane Operator

There are several different certification options that you can pursue if you’re interested in becoming a tower crane operator. However, the most attractive certification to improve your marketability must come from the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). The NCCCO is an industry-recognized organization that offers crane operator certifications throughout the United States.

Note that earning the certification will require you to pass a standardized exam that tests your knowledge of crane operations, safety regulations, and basic math. It will also include a practical exam.
